الملخص
This thesis conducts a comparative content analysis of American and British newspapers to examine how the term “genocide” is framed in coverage of the fifth Israel-Gaza war of the 21st century, which began in October 2023. Focusing on a one-year period and six influential outlets The Guardian, The Daily Mail, The Telegraph, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal the study explores the coverage, dominant frames, and sourcing patterns of genocide discourse. Quantitative and qualitative analyses reveal that British newspapers introduced the term earlier and with greater variability, while American outlets emphasized legal contexts, particularly South Africa’s case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Thematic analysis identified three key narratives: genocide as a contested legal concept, defense and denial strategies by Israel, and selective humanization of victims. The findings highlight disparities in sourcing, framing, and moral accountability, highlighting the role of media in shaping public perceptions of conflict and genocide.
