Problems Encountered by EFL Learners in Composition Writing: A Case Study of Secondary Schools, ElManagil Locality, Gezira State, Sudan

الملخص

Writing, as a productive language skill, plays an essential role in promoting language learning as learners experiment with words, sentences, and large chunks of writing to communicate their ideas effectively and to reinforce the grammar and vocabulary they learn in class. This study attempts to: investigating learner’s problems in composition writing. It aims at stressing the importance of improving EFL learner’s composition writing. It also aims at ensuring that, using literary texts enhances learners’ composition writing and showing some teaching techniques that improve learners writing skills. The study adopts the descriptive analytical method. A questionnaire was the tool used for collecting the data from (50) EFL secondary schools teachers at AL Managil locality. Collected data were statistically analyzed by the (SPSS) Program. The results show that: Most EFL students are not able to produce expressive, coherent and logically sequenced ideas in composition. Reading literary texts enhances students’ writing skills .Brainstorming technique develops EFL students’ essay writing process. Composition writing facilitates students’ acquisition of the basic study skills needed for writing English texts. Collaboration offers students the opportunity to interact on different aspects of writing. Overcrowded classes impede teachers’ performance in teaching composition. Limited word knowledge is the main shortcomings in EFL classes. In the light of these results, it is recommended: Students should review their written work. Teachers should find enough time to correct learners’ written work. Feed back and follow-up strategies should be practiced in the writing process. There should be a systematic classroom process in teaching composition.
