Homogenization is concerned with the description of microscopic properties of heterogeneous material immersed in various environments in terms of their microscopic properties. These heterogeneous materials have microscopic properties which are spatially oscillatory with the frequencies of oscillations depending on the distribution of constituent of underling materials. This renders the direct numerical treatment of models of composites very difficult and in most cases impractical. Indeed, meshes in numerical schemes for approximating computational domains occupied by a composite must be very fine to capture microscopic behaviours. Homogenization seeks to mitigate this problem by a approximating the underlying composite by a homogeneous one readily amenable to numerical computations. Since 1970th there are many mathematical techniques developed by means of homogenization, one of the most profound methods in this direction is the oscillating test function method due to the mathematician Tartar. In this dissertation, we aim to implement this technique to linear elliptic partial differential equations in fixed spaces. We show that the solution of the original (nonhomogeneous) problem converges in suitable topologies (Sobolev spaces) to the solution of the homogenized problem. This dissertation recommends to use of Tartar method for the homogenization of evolution partial differential equations (Parabolic and Hyperbolic PDEs) and also the homogenization of PDEs in varying domains (perforated domains).
