الملخص
The thesis has two main general objectives:to highlight the overallmarine shrimp fishery characteristics inthe coastal lagoons and coastal deepwater trawling grounds, and to focuson the fishery of the Green TigerPrawn,Penaeous semisulcatuusin the Red Sea of Sudan. Two main shrimpfishing methods were employed in thisresearch program. These comprisedthe use of cast nets and the Otter trawling nets. The fishery statistical dataand shrimp biological data were collected during the period 1999 - 2002.Penaeous monodonandP. indicusconstitute the coastal lagoon shrimpfishery. Their catch compositionis 67% and 33% respectively.Penaeousmonodonpredominated in Entabib whileP. indicuswas highly distributedin Ashat. In the coastal deep water trawling grounds, four species arereported. These arePenaeous semisulcatus,Metapenaeous monoceros,PenaeouslatisulcatusandPenaeous japonicus. The catch composition oftheP.semisulcatuswas 67.8%, that ofM. monoceroswas 26.9% while thecomposition of the other two species collectively was only 5.3% in thesummer months. Shrimps were more catchable during the night (80%) whilethe catch was very low during thedaytime (20%). The overall shrimpdistribution whether in the summer orin the winter months had similartrends along the coast-deep water axis. But the catch rate was alwaysdecreasing towards the deep waters witha comparatively higher level in thewinter months. In the North-Southaxis, the overall shrimps distributionshowed increasing trend from the northtowards the south in both seasons. But the catch rate in thewinter was about four folds of that reported in thesummer season. The richest fishing groundsare located at Fishing areas 3Eand 4E along the Sudanese Red sea coast, where the catch rate averaged 13.1kg/ hour. The Green Tiger Prawn was onlyfound in the coastal deep watersand not in the shallow coastallagoons. Its catch composition in thecommercial production was about 71%by weight and 64% by numbers. Avery strong negative relationship betweenthe catch rate of this animal andthe length of the trawling fishing duration was found. The best trawlingfishing duration for this animal was two hours. The best time of fishing theGreen Tiger Prawn was from 8.00 pm to 4.00 am. This might havesuggested that this animal was nocturnalin its distribution. The distributionofP. semisulcatushad the same trends of distribution as the overall shrimpsdid in the two axes. The morphometric relationships areestablished of the Green TigerPrawn were established. This animalis detritus and most probably feeds onsilt, mud, organic matter. Females had a high sex ratio in May andDecember. Smaller females had a low ratio (20%)and the bigger ones had ahigher ratio (80%). Fecundity data occur in October show a maximumnumber of 9660 and an average of 4778 eggs.
