Interaction of Residents towards the Environmental Impact of Al-Guneid Sugar Factory, Gezira State, Sudan (1962-2015)

الملخص

Sudan’s industrial sector was historically limited to utilities and small-scale food processing, but, lately, the majority of these industrial projects in the Sudan have a significant economic and environmental impacts. The aim of this study was to assess the environmental impact of Al-Guneid Sugar Scheme which has been in continuous operation for a period of over fifty years in Butana Locality, Gezira State, Sudan. The data were gathered from the Factory records, previous studies, interviewing influential personalities in the local community and field visits. Two questionnaires were filled by two groups; farmers in the area of study and non-farmers existing in the same area. Data were analyzed using the SPSS program. Results showed that 64% of the farmers believed that the factory was valuable and 87% of them thought that it was feasible. Services were appreciated by 92% of non farmers, while only 64% of the farmers depended on them. On the other hand, 56% and 67% of farmers thought that the factory caused soil and water pollution, respectively. The existence of Al-guneid Sugar Scheme has brought positive changes in economic conditions by raising the standard of living, social status, education, health, and changed the area’s demography. On the other hand, it has also brought negative environmental changes, such as air and water pollution. It is recommended to adopt green harvesting of sugar cane and increase the height of chimneys to reduce the smog. Also, to find out safe ways of liquid waste disposal instead of spilling the waste into the Blue Nile. The Factory administration has to establish a department to be concerned with minimizing the negative impacts of the factory on the environment and compensate those affected by pollution. The administration of the factory should comply with the regulations and standards of sustainable development.
