Dietary Intake and Dietary Behavior and Serum Vitamin D among Adults Suffering Colorectal Cancer in Gaza Strip

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer in men and the second common cancer in women worldwide. CRC risk factors are numerous; they include diet and vitamin D deficiency which have been identified as modifiable risk factors for CRC in previous studies. Despite that there are many studies about the association between diet and CRC incidence, but according to the researcher knowledge, there is no study evaluated dietary behavior, dietary intake and serum vitamin D among CRC patients in Gaza Strip Aim: To determine and clarify dietary intake, dietary behavior and serum vitamin D among CRC patients attending Abdel Aziz Al-Rantisi Hospital and European Gaza Hospital in Gaza Strip, and compare them with their controls. Methods: A case-control study design included 100 participants aged 36-70 years; 50 newly diagnosed CRC patients and 50 controls apparently healthy and free from CRC. They were selected from Abdel Aziz Al-Rantisi Hospital and European Gaza Hospital in Gaza Strip. They were matched by age, sex and region. All participants were interviewed and they filled out questionnaire sheet. Dietary intake of vitamin D was assessed by using food frequency questionnaire. In addition, weight, height and waist circumferences were measured and BMI was calculated for all participants. Moreover, blood samples were collected to measure 25 (OH) D levels in serum. Pilot study was conducted for 10 participants (five cases and five controls) and they were excluded. Response rate was 92.5%. Results: The mean age of participants was (56.28 years, among them, 48% were males and 52% were females. This study reported that there was a significant positive association between CRC and the following variables: frequent addition of salt to food (P=0.01), consumption of processed food high in salt (P=0.001), obesity (P=0.001) and low levels of vitamin D (P=0.001). It also indicated that mean level of serum 25 (OH) D among case group (7.78 4.85) ng/mL was lower than the mean among control group (10.57 4.50) ng/mL. It demonstrated that 54% of case group versus 36% of control group were obese. Mean waist circumference among case group (103.95 14.96) cm was higher than the mean among control group (95.14 13.68) cm. Moreover, it reported that there was a significant inverse association between CRC and moderate intensity physical activities (P=0.001). There was no statistically significant difference found between case group and control group regarding consumption of fruits, vegetables and food rich in vitamin D. Conclusion: There are many modifiable risk factors contribute to CRC incidence. They include vitamin D deficiency, obesity and high consumption of salt, whereas, moderate intensity physical activities have protective role against CRC. VII Recommendations: To raise awareness among general population about CRC risk factors and fight against certain risk factors by maintaining healthy body weight, practicing physical activities and making dietary modification to reduce CRC incidence.
