الملخص

Monitoring of two-phase flow in a pipeline is a significant problem in the oil industry and other industries. In order to manage oil wells efficiently, the oil industry requires accurate on-line sensors to monitor oil, gas, and water flow in production pipelines. This research presents the investigation, construction, and testing of a non-intrusive electromagnetic wave sensor (EM sensor) operating at radio and microwave frequencies for on-line monitoring and measuring two-phase flow fractions of ((water/gas), (oil/gas), and (water/oil)), expressed as volume percentages in a pipeline. The sensor is based on a cylindrical cavity resonator and uses the shift in resonant frequency to detect and measure the components of two-phase flow in a pipeline. Two versions of sensor systems (laboratory and industrial) with different dimensions were constructed, experimentally tested at the laboratory of the BEST Research Institute - Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), United Kingdom, and simulated using the High-Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) software. The simulated data were validated with the experimental results. The experimental results showed that the total shift in the first resonant peak for varying volume percentages from 0 to 100% are 32 MHz, 3.5 MHz, and 47.2 MHz for (water/gas), (oil/gas), and (water/oil) mixtures, respectively, for the laboratory cavity version. While for the industrial cavity version, the total shifts are 68.2 MHz, 2 MHz, and 44.13 MHz for (water/gas), (oil/gas), and (water/oil) mixtures, respectively. The mixtures in these tests are static and therefore represent a stratified flow regime. The experimental results were in good agreement with theoretical predictions simulated by the HFSS software package, with a maximum error percentage of about 2.3%, 2.3%, and 4.8% for (water/gas), (oil/gas), and (water/oil) tests, respectively, for the laboratory cavity version. While for the industrial cavity version, the maximum error percentage was about 5.6%, 6.2%, and 5.8% for (water/gas), (oil/gas), and (water/oil) mixtures, respectively. The use of EM mixing approaches is proposed in conjunction with HFSS for the dispersed flow regime and compared with experimental data from the National Engineering Laboratory for the (oil/water) dispersed regime of the oil continuous phase. It was found that in each approach there is one model with the least error compared with experimental data. The models are: (Bruggeman U.M.M, Looyenga P.L.M, Looyenga D.M.M, and Coherent N.M.M). These models are then used to simulate different mixtures of dispersed and bubbly flow regimes. After ensuring the reliability of the HFSS package for the simulation of different cases of two-phase flow, this package is used to simulate annular flow regime and different cases of dispersed and bubbly flow of two-phase mixtures of ((water/gas), (oil/gas), and (water/oil)). These experimental and simulation results show that the studied sensor system will form the basis for an advanced real-time multiphase fluid composition monitoring platform.
