Effect of Tonsillitis on Pre-School and Basic School Children and their Mothers Knowledage, Attitude and Practice towards it in Marngan Aloamal , Gezira State, Sudan (May, 2013)

الملخص

This is a descriptive cross-sectional community based study aims to assess the effect of tonsillitis in preschool and basic school children in Maringan (Aloamal) area, in May 2013. Tonsillitis is inflammation due to infection of the tonsils. Pharyngitis is inflammation of the oropharynx and it may lead to tonsillitis and adenoiditis . The tonsils tend to atrophy in early adulthood. The symptoms are sore throat difficulty on swallowing earache, and the sign are red enlarge tonsils and sometimes pus over it. It is a common condition in children 3-15 in age. The objectives are to determine the effect of tonsillitis in school attendance, to determine type of complication in the study group, and to assess knowledge attitude and practice of mothers of the children towards tonsillitis, 150 children and their mothers were selected through simple proportional statistical random sampling. Structured questionnaire was used, data was analyzed by statistical package of social sciences (SPSS). Results showed that 67% of the children were absent due to tonsillitis with many complications include chest infection, ear infection, rheumatic fever and its effect on the valve of the heart . Mothers have good knowledge about the disease but they do not know the importance of using Beinzathine penicillin. The study found that there was significant relation between tonsillitis and absenteeism from the school, significant between mothers education and home management. There was association between mothers education and infection by tonsillitis and using health services. The study recommended Health education of the mothers regarding the prophylactic measures. Encourage the mothers for follow up and advice them to seek care in care of recurrent tonsillitis, Beinzathine penicillin to prevent (rheumatic fever ). Increase the coverage of health insurance services to facilitate management of tonsillitis. Further studies is recommended.
