Meriones libycusis a nocturnal Saharan rodent caught in the Beni-abbes oasis (30°7,2°10'W; Algeria), which has an annual reproductive cycle characterized by the reproductive activity in spring and a long phase of sexual quiescence in other seasons. The prostate plays an important role in sperm formation and fertility. This work describes the anatomical organization of the prostatic complex and the biometric seasonal variations. It also presents the histology and morphometry of the anterior and ventral prostatic lobes during the seasonal reproductive cycle. Merion's prostatic complex consists of four distinct even lobes attached to the urethra and symmetrically arranged around the bladder: anterior lobes, ventral lobes, dorsal lobes and dorsolateral lobes. This organisation is similar to that observed in Mongolian Gerbil, Saharan gerbil and different to that described in rat and mouse. The biometric data are more important during the spring. The ventral and dorsolateral lobes are the least sensitive to periodic variations.In Meriones libycus, the prostatic lobes are formed by tubulo-alveolar glands or acini surrounded by a fibromuscular stroma. The ventral and anterior prostate can be identified by the organisation of the acini, the glandular epithelium and the stromal thickness. Significant histological changes are observed during the seasonal reproductive cycle. Morphometric analysis shows changes in height of secretory epithelium, supranuclear zone and adjacent stroma. Both histological compartments atrophy and regenerate simultaneously.
