- A man begins feeling his own existentialistic wonders and starts searching for answers that surround his own concerned entity without losing his ability to create sound justifications directing him to walk toward a certain goal, or stay assured of his chosen path. And by doing so, he sees his own universe; and so he assumes the primacy of existence over essence. That is the sole principle of Existentialism, a philosophy that was – in the middle of the previous century – a theological, political, and social revolution. A reflexive response to the crisis of successive wars; a result of the western mentality, not to mention the role of the era of modernity that had adopted entity as a source for knowledge. Existentialism had provided a philosophical approach explaining the crisis of modern man who felt a universal self-isolation, an isolation that grew farther in desperate needs for explanations in a world filled with contradictions and non-harmony. As a result, the birth of the great scholar and thinker Sren Kierkegaard, who is considered the father of Existentialism, took place. He had pronounced his own entity and person as an axis for his philosophy; his own life troubles, with all its details, along with his relationship with his father or with his fiancé, and his stance against the Danish church and the Danish society became the center of his thoughts and theories. This may make one easily realize that the very basis of Existentialism is strongly attached to one's own life and problems and his relations with the world around him or her. A man owns his true personal reality by thinking of his own entity. It is also safe to say that the French philosopher and scholar Jean-Paul Sartre is the one responsible for the spreading of this philosophical view amongst the intellectual society, especially among the general society. Even within the simplest people. That is because of his great ability to transfer such theories and ideas from specialized academic research into literature, theater, and other types of art including drawing and painting. This had encouraged a whole generation of artists to join in the existentialist stream that provided them with self-freedom and the ability to seek the truth by searching within, and to continue in pursuit of solutions for the struggle of modern man, who was living in a reality setback economically, politically, and culturally, especially in western societies where Europe was still struggling from the scourges of war. This research – Existentialistic Features of Modern Iraqi Art – discusses and studies the clearly seen vocabulary and elements of Existentialism in Iraqi art throughout the sixties and the seventies of the previous century, and its strong influence by the new culture of the fifties era where young artists had found in that new culture – existentialism – a haven and an anchorage that achieved their hopes and aims, keeping them safe from the struggle that was largely spread between political parties and the military coups that had conquered their country, Iraq. Also, the unstable economic situation made the youth artists live in poverty. This research consists of four main chapters. The first chapter discusses the problem and issues arising within writing the research by trying to answer the following question of modern Iraqi art: What are the existentialistic features of modern Iraqi art? This research also aims at introducing the existentialistic features in modern Iraqi drawing and painting on the level of content along with appearance. As for the research limits in the first chapter, it contained a variety of works from many different Iraqi artists in order to serve the main aim of the research, focusing on the eras of the sixties and seventies. As for the second chapter, it consisted of the theoretical views explaining them throughout three different studies. The first study explained the concepts of existence theoretically and philosophically, starting from the Epic of Gilgamesh and the impressions of the old Iraqi theology, passing by both the Greek and the pharaonic civilizations, and the ideation of Islamic and Christian religions about the concept of existence. The research also explained in detail the teachings of modern philosophers such as Descartes and his concepts, Kierkegaard, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, arriving at the most modern philosophers such as Sartre, who is considered the most influential and important figure in modern existentialist thought. The second chapter studies and discusses the influence of existentialism in modern European art, from Cézanne to many of the important Impressionist, Symbolist, and Cubist artists. Arriving at the surrealist Salvador Dalí, who is considered the most important in the twentieth century, keeping in mind that Dalí's experience is considered the soul of European art in the twentieth century. As for the third study, it consisted of outlining the arguments of styles in modern Iraqi art in the sixties and the seventies, limited only to the methods used in this research, focusing on the different existentialistic imaginations that Iraqi artists had dealt with, using the personal biography of certain Iraqi artists and the influence of political, theological, and social situations on them. The research also contains some interviews with Iraqi figures and discusses some of the studies that were done by critics of Iraqi art. The research concludes by discussing the indicators and using them as a means for the material of the study. The third chapter consisted of the procedures related to the research society and its methodology, and the analysis of 18 samples used in the research. The fourth chapter contained the final conclusions, besides some suggestions. The most important conclusions of the research are as follows: The Iraqi artist has confirmed his own style, technique, and color performance. An example of such solidity is his usage of mixed media (the use of different materials in the making of artworks causing a unique impression and astonishment). The Iraqi artist has also confronted existential crises and addressed issues of death and time as a stance against nothingness, leading his works to resemble symbolic realism and abstract expressionism, representing a true reflection of the political struggle and the chaotic, theologically changing culture throughout that era of Iraqi society. The Iraqi artist had dealt with understanding of reification and used it as a stage for the engagement of art with existence. The Iraqi artist was also assiduous to consider absence as presence and adopted Sophism experience to clarify his own existentialistic direction in art. The Iraqi artist reconfirmed the concepts of choice as a means when one is put in front of a political or theological dilemma, as long as life is based on the idea of counteraction, sacrifice, and absolute challenge. The Iraqi artist also adopted isolation and alienation throughout his works, as long as he or she found a contradiction between the situation inside Iraq and abroad, resisting and rejecting the lived reality of his own. The research also concluded the following: The Iraqi artist has implemented a better meaning to freedom and personal style by continuously searching for his own personal kingdom. All the elements and vocabulary of the surrounding reality, which were the center of the existentialistic stance of the artist regarding the world, were a place of discussion for the Iraqi artist; an example of this is the appearance of pop art presenting an existentialistic dimension. The Iraqi artist believed in the importance of time and the entity of time, and therefore everything could encounter change and diminishment. Thus, artworks became a substitute for non-existence. The body is one of the self-reflections to understand the "I" and the impression one makes through it. For the Iraqi artist, the body was not only a figure for painting but also a cultural speech and a theater for understanding the world. The Iraqi artist was always in touch with historical and political situations, allowing the works of art to be an area where existentialistic stances about the world are represented.
