الملخص

The aim of this thesis was to study the effect of Portland cement in improving the swelling characteristics of two Sudanese black cotton soils.The findings of the previous researches in the subject of cement stabilization of expansive soils were reviewed.The effect of cement on the index properties of the two soils was studied. It was found that the addition of cement drastically reduced the P.I., free swell and L.S. and increased the S.L.The effect of cement on the swelling pressure and swell percent was studied. It was found that the addition of cement reduced the values of the swell percent and swelling pressure to insignificant levels. It was also found that the addition of cement reduced the influence of the variation of the initial m .c. and soaking time on the resulting swelling pressure and swell percent. The findings of this study were discussed and comments of their practical applications were suggested
