Social Class Distinction in Moroccan Comedy Shows: Self-Orientalism discourse analysis

الملخص

This study conducted a qualitative content analysis to examine the exemplification of Self-Orientalism in Moroccan stand-up comedy shows by two Moroccan comedians. Gad Elmaleh and Yassar Lmghari, that is through analysing the different aspects of class differences and terms that appear in their sketches/videos. This research focuses on different Television programs where Yassar Lmghari has participated, in addition to the performances of the Gad Elmaleh. Self-Orientalism is used as an extension of Orientalism in the theoretical framework to investigate the portrayal of self-mockery, self-dehumanization, cultural differences, and the binaries of both the Self and the Other. The findings of this thesis showed that there is an obvious use of Self-Orientalism in both comedians’ sketches. Different styles were used by the comedians in their performances, though Self-Orientalism remains the centrepiece of their sketches, through which the two comedians denigrated the Moroccan culture. Gad Elmaleh, who represents the elites and high-class community, focuses mainly on the differences between the West (France) and the East (Morocco). In contrast, Yassar Lmghari, who represents the popular and low-class community, engages in self-orientalism by implying the binary opposition between the high-class and low-class citizens in Morocco. In other words, he discriminates between Europeans and Moroccans, with an extreme focus on elites and the lower class within the Moroccan society. Both comedians employed self-mockery and self-depiction in their shows.
